FAFSA Fast Facts

The quick and easy guide to filling out your FAFSA Form

College is expensive for a lot of us, so if you need help paying for it, there’s a way to get free financial aid. Here’s how.

Make sure to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in October of the year before you plan to attend college.

Here’s what you need to know about filling your form:

1.Apply for aid even if you’re unsure about eligibility; financial need isn’t the only factor. The FAFSA4caster provides an early estimate of your annual benefits—but it’s not 100% accurate.

2.FAFSA gives you access to grants, work-study, student loans, and scholarships—$122 billion each year!

3.File online for faster processing and check your status from your mobile device – Grab the app “My Student Aid.” You need a user I.D. and password; your parents need their own.

5.The earlier you apply, the more likely you are to receive aid.

6.It’s free to file. Companies like Frank offer filing help for a small fee.

7.When you file, you’ll need a lot of financial records from yourself and your parents if you’re a dependent (Including social security numbers, W-2s, tax returns, bank accounts). This video sums it up.

9.In the 11th grade? Here’s your checklist.

10.Include a list of 10 schools you’re interested in; you can change your list later in the process.

11.If you need help with your application, call 800-433-3243 or visit this page.

12. You must reapply every year to maintain eligibility.
